I know why the caged bird sings...

When I was in high school, I took a book out of the library that was filled with prose and poetry written by women who had suffered sexual abuse. Though I never fit that category, the words of Maya Angelou always spoke to me and I found her t0 be someone with whom I think I could be a kindred spirit. Today, while roaming the site of a client, I came across a quote by her and, just as the teenage me once was, I found myself drawn to her...

“Women should be tough, tender, laugh as much as possible, and live long lives. The struggle for equality continues unabated, and the woman warrior who is armed with wit and courage will be among the first to celebrate victory." ~~Maya Angelou

Sometimes, the magnitude of the written word enthralls me. The fact that words written eons ago, or two minutes ago, can effect and affect so greatly--it just astounds me. Beauty, sorrow, joy, pain, fear, exhilaration...all with a choice turn of phrase.
I may be a lowly copywriter, but the words have everlasting value. They captivate, sell, secure and salivate under the right hand. I feel empowered. =)

I always need to gear myself up to read her books or poems, or Toni Morrison's, for that matter, because their words just take my breath away and make me need to stop for a moment -- or several.

Angelou's poetry just touches you so deeply, and profoundly, when you read it; her strength, her wisdom.
